Supporting sustainable development involves giving people the skills that will be in demand in the future. In Belgium, the ECO+ project is doing just this by offering workers the chance to train and gain skills in the new fields of ecologically friendly building construction and renovation. This is a growing market and source of jobs, as people seek to lower their energy usage and benefit the environment. The project is managed by ACFI-FIAS – an organisation active in training and coaching for employment – and participants are mainly drawn from disadvantaged groups of job-seekers. Courses in eco-construction and eco-renovation are available in nine centres in Wallonia – three of them in Hainault province as part of a sister ESF project. These courses cover elements such as thermal insulation to reduce energy losses, wood-frame construction techniques to replace concrete, natural clay plastering skills, and the use of ‘green roof’ technologies.
